Bachelor degree in English Literature at Alfred University

English majors are encouraged to assume responsibility for the direction of their education by developing a course of study based on their goals. From the numerous courses offered, a total of 40 semester hours in English is required.

Of these hours, students must complete 12 hours of study at the 200 level: English 201 (The Language of Literary Art), English 223 (Survey of British Literature), and English 241 (Survey of American Literature).

A minimum of 28 hours must be drawn from the 300 and 400 levels. English 201 (The Language of Literary Art) is a prerequisite for advanced writing courses . Either English 223 (Survey of British Literature) or English 241 (Survey of American Literature) is required before students can take advanced literature courses. English majors may not count EGL 450, Independant Study, toward completion of the major.

English 102, Writing II, is strongly recommended as a foundation course for all English majors.
