The Studio Arts major offers a focused curriculum of study and creative inquiry for students interested in pursuing careers in fine arts and related fields. We provide a strong foundation, balancing the aesthetic, conceptual and technical. Each student is individually encouraged to develop their own artistic voice in an interdisciplinary approach. Knowledge of traditional skills is emphasized along with contemporary art and ideas.
Offerings include a wide range of classes at multiple levels in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Photography, Two- and Three-Dimensional Design, Color Theory, Computer Graphics, and Art History. Courses serve the whole university community as part of the Humanities and Fine Arts Requirements and as Free Electives. Completion of the major in Studio Arts requires 42 credits. A Studio Art minor requires 18 credits. Class sizes vary, averaging 15–20 students per class, with some advanced classes having smaller enrollments, allowing for the optimum learning experience. Independent study is available for advanced levels.
Students participate in faculty-led trips to New York City and regional museums and galleries. Annual student exhibitions enhance learning opportunities. Our internship program permits students to obtain professional experience in museums, galleries and artist's studios and our faculty is comprised of working professionally exhibited artists.
