-Degree Requirements-
The major and minor in Geography Teaching prepares students for a career in teaching geography (as part of a social studies curriculum) at the secondary (grades 7-12) level. Therefore, it is partially designed and governed by the McKay School of Education. The geographic focus of this program is intended to help future teachers understand and teach the basic principles of human, physical, and regional geography. The program also includes analytical and technical courses that geography teachers can use to develop innovative learning activities that will develop higher-order skills in their own students.

Successful graduates of this program will be able to:

* Research and describe the human and physical characteristics of regions at global and local scales (Courses: Geog 120, 250, regional electives
* Teach, explain, and illustrate the basic physical processes that create geographic patterns in the physical landscape (Courses: Geog 101, systematic electives)
* Teach, explain, amd illustrate the geographic interactions of culture, population, economics, politics, and the physical environment in influencing patterns of human activity (Courses: Geog 120, 130, systematic electives)
* Develop and use maps, GIS, statistics, and other resources to dynamically and effectively teach geographic patterns and principles (Courses: Stat 221, Geog 211, 212, 222, GIS electives)
* Prepare lesson plans and materials to effectively teach about geographic facts and principles (Courses: ScEd courses)
