The Geography Department offers a broad-based undergraduate program that prepares its majors for either further studies at the graduate level, or for entry into the ever-expanding job market.
The course of study for majors has three parts:
1. All majors are required to take a core of courses that provide an introduction to the discipline, exposure to the technical side of the field, and a capstone course that emphasizes individual research.
2. Additionally, students are required to take a minimum of two offerings from the department's list of regional area studies to give them an expanded, global outlook in keeping with the goals set forth in the university's mission statement.
3. Finally majors are required to select a track in either physical geography of human/cultural geography and follow a program of study that will emphasize that sub–discipline.
Two other options are also available to students having an interest in geography:
The first of these is aimed at students who have an interest in teaching social studies with a particular interest in geography at the secondary level. These students pursue a dual degree in Secondary Education: Social Studies and Geography. This program, which has a total requirement of 134 credits to be graduated, will result in certification in the area of Social Studies with a concentration in Geography.
The second option is for a student to minor in geography while majoring in another course of study. The minor requires the completion of 21 credits of specific courses and is particularly popular with students who are majoring in Earth Space studies and Environmental Studies whose programs include a significant number of geography courses as requirements.
The Concentrations are offered in:
Physical Geography
Human/Cultural Geography
