History students at Barry University receive a broad liberal arts education within the framework of the University's commitment to a quality education. Students who major in history are provided with intensive training in research, in critical thinking and in the art of writing. Students are, therefore, prepared for careers in a wide choice of fields, including the corporate and business world, professional work in libraries and museums, the practice of law, government service, and teaching on the secondary and college levels.
Course of Study
Students majoring in history at Barry currently take 33 credits in the major. They are encouraged to minor in a related discipline of their choice. Courses in Western Civilization, United States History and a senior capstone course taken in the senior year and required for the major. There are regular offerings in three main fields: Latin America, the United States, and Modern Europe. The department frequently offers courses in topics of special interest to students.
Internships
Students also have an opportunity to do independent study on topics of interest, and internships in various approved agencies. Internships offer opportunities for valuable experience in historical research or preservation, in archival work, or in public policy. Our students have interned at a number of historical agencies in South Florida and at the Summit of the Americas, a gathering in Miami of heads of governments from all over Central and South America.
