Try on a rusty World War I helmet or read some 400-year-old love letters. Analyze songs from the American Revolution or visit a West African food store in Atlanta. Read memoirs by Holocaust survivors or narratives written by slaves. These are some of the remnants from history that students at Agnes Scott analyze in order to better understand the past. Historians tell stories about other times and places, on the basis of the documents, objects, pictures and sounds that past generations have left behind.
As they learn, history students strengthen their skills as readers, writers, critical thinkers and speakers. Their understanding of the lives of people from different regions of the world and different eras in history encourages respect for difference, while providing a perspective from which to assess events of the present and prospects for the future.

What will I study?
Religion, magic and science; India, China and Japan; race, ethnicity and immigration; women in America and Europe. Courses at Agnes Scott investigate these and many other topics. The geographical strengths of the program are in African, American, Asian and European history. Experiences of women and of African-Americans receive special attention in many courses.
Some courses include optional Language-Across-the-Curriculum sections, where students who have studied French, German or Spanish can read historical sources unavailable in translation
