Minimum of 42 semester credit hours (typically 10-11 courses) in the department
distributed as follows: one course each in European history, American history
and non-Western history, the Junior Seminar and the Senior Project, as well as
at least four upper-level electives.
Double and student-designed majors are encouraged.
While acknowledging that the accumulation of data plays a part in the study
of history, the department's major program places a greater emphasis on the
investigation-from various points of view-of the political, religious, social,
and economic ideas and institutions by which people have endeavored since the
dawn of civilization to order their world.
