Students interested in pursuing intensive study in Materials Science should contact the Chemistry or Physics Department for advice in formulating an independent program of study. You can then apply to the Committe on Student Standing and Programs for consideration and approval of such an independent Concentration.

Core curriculum
Chemistry 100-101 or 105 (general chemistry), 220 (organic chemistry I), 304 (physical chemistry I) and 353 (materials science).

Mathematics 114 (calculus II), 121 (calculus III)

Physics 105-106 (introductory physics), 211-213 (waves and optics with associated lab).

Chemistry Majors’ Requirements for the Materials Science concentration:
1. Chemistry 305 (physical chemistry II)
2. One half semester course from the following: 351 (bioinorganic chemistry), 352 (topics in biophysical chemistry) or 357 (topics in bioonorganic chemistry) (taught as biomaterials this year by Karin)
3. Two semesters of research in Materials Science.
4. Either Engineering 59 (mechanics of solids) or 82 (engineering materials), both offered at Swarthmore.

Physics Majors’ Requirements for the Materials Science concentration:

1. Physics 303 (statistical physics)
2. Physics 322 (solid state physics)
2. Physics 326 (advanced physics laboratory)
3. Two semesters of research in Materials Science
4. Either Engineering 59 (mechanics of solids) or 82 (engineering materials), both offered at Swarthmore.
