In the age of globalization, the International Studies (INT) major provides students with a strong background in geography, politics, culture, language, international relations and economics, enabling them to understand and analyze issues in an international and intercultural context, compete in an interdependent world, and succeed in a challenging global environment. Students will develop proficiency in at least one foreign language, awareness of the impact of geography and culture on people and events, and the ability to understand the political and economic dimensions of global issues.
International studies is an interdisciplinary arts and sciences major with a focus on contemporary international issues as part of a solid program of career preparation. The international studies Major is built on a base of interdisciplinary courses in international studies. Students then complete the major by selecting elective courses drawn from various academic areas with international, regional, or cross-cultural themes approved by their INT adviser. International Studies electives may be chosen from a group of internationally oriented courses in business, history, economics, philosophy, and modern languages. This process allows students to develop a program of international studies that matches their academic interests, career goals, or plans for future graduate or professional studies.
The International Studies major is designed to prepare students for careers with an international focus, including business, service with federal government agencies, international agencies, trade and professional organizations, the media and nonprofit organizations. In addition, International Studies majors can combine their minor in business studies with major electives such as international management, marketing and law, to create a program of study with a focus on international business.
