Mission
The Japanese Studies Program was established in 1990 as the first undergraduate degree program at any HBCU and the first for any university in the south central United States. Our mission is to develop graduates who have a solid foundation in areas involving knowledge of Japan and Asia, as well as broad knowledge in international studies, and who are able to meet the competitive demands of graduate schools and professions in language education, mass communications, international business, the Foreign Service, international law, international relations, and international consultation. To achieve this purpose, the program, which is interdisciplinary in nature, offers a four-year-long education in both Japanese language and culture, including courses in history, politics and government, political economy, philosophy and religion, and literature. Students from other disciplines may also take a minor in the program. Except for the language courses, all courses are taught in English. During the junior year, although not required, students majoring in Japanese Studies are encouraged to study in Japan. Course equivalents for study abroad are arranged on a student-by-student basis.

Objectives
Upon completion of this Program, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence in communicating effectively in Japanese.
2. Acquire knowledge of political, social, economic, and cultural systems in Japan.
3. Acquire skills in effective communication (both oral and written) and analysis.
4. Demonstrate competence in critical thinking, research methods, and computer literacy.
5. Distinguish and appreciate diverse values and systems in cross-cultural situations.
6. Prepare themselves for employment in the international market or for graduate schools in Japanese studies, international business, international relations, and international affairs.
