The marketing curriculum is designed to provide a background which will be useful for entry-level jobs as well as long-range management positions in such marketing career tracks as marketing management, sales and distribution, advertising and promotion, new product development and management, marketing research, database marketing, retailing, services marketing, business-to-business marketing, eMarketing, international marketing, and customer data analytics. In providing students an understanding of fundamental marketing concepts and applying theory to practice, the marketing major also promotes the students understanding of the decisional challenges, opportunities, risks and environment that marketing professionals face in designing and implementing marketing strategies and activities.

By carefully selecting the courses in their marketing major, students can build a concentration around an area of individual interest. For example, students interested in the application of information technology (IT) in marketing may select IT-oriented electives such as Communications on the World Wide Web, information technology and marketing, and computer information system courses. Students attracted to careers in international marketing can add international business, history and language courses to their programs of study. Those seeking jobs in the marketing communications field can enroll in graphics design and public relations writing courses. An honors program is available for outstanding marketing majors. In addition to two marketing required courses in Marketing Research and Marketing Management, students select four marketing electives from a list of more than 15 different courses, including a marketing internship and directed study, to strengthen their preparation for a specific career track of interest. Additionally, students are allowed to select two marketing-related electives from other business and the arts and sciences departments. Students also have an opportunity to minor in a specific field of interest, e.g., in Finance, Accounting, Information Technology, Law Management, International Studies, and Business Communication.

Marketing majors are equipped to pursue entry-level positions in a variety of profit and not-for-profit organizations such as advertising agencies, marketing research firms, management consultancies, retailing, wholesaling, manufacturing companies, service organizations, educational institutions, museums, entertainment, and sports fields. Students are also assigned an academic adviser for assistance in selecting course work or making career choices.
