The department offers the major in mathematics in which the student has the fl exibility to choose courses appropriate to preparation for careers in industry, teaching, or business, or to pursue graduate studies. Additional (graduate level) specialization in fi elds such as statistics or operations research, for example, increases the student’s options. Mathematics majors are encouraged also to complete a major or minor in a related field. Students who intend to teach mathematics at the middle school or secondary school level must complete a second major in secondary education. Students considering graduate work in mathematics should complete at least one year of college physics. They should also develop a working knowledge of French.
