Mission:
Centenary is a selective liberal arts college offering undergraduate programs and a limited number of graduate programs in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, which strengthen the foundation for students' personal lives and career goals. Students and faculty work together to build a community focused on ethical and intellectual development, respect and concern for human and spiritual values, and the joy of creativity and discovery. The Department of Mathematics aims to contribute to the student’s liberal education by showing the role mathematics has played and is playing in the development of civilization and by giving him or her the opportunity to appreciate mathematics for its own esthetic qualities.
Our department consists of four full-time faculty members and offers a B.A. in mathematics. Our curriculum is planned so that majors after graduation can choose from a number of avenues, including teaching, industry, actuarial work, and graduate study. Recent majors have taken jobs as actuaries and math teachers in Shreveport, computer programmers for Alltel, computer system analysts for companies in the Northeast, and high school teachers in Dallas. Other students have gone on to graduate school at Tulane, Vanderbilt, SMU, LSU Baton Rouge, the University of Arkansas, the University of Mississippi, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Texas at Austin.
