Medical technologists are medical professionals that work with physicians and other members of the healthcare team, performing laboratory tests that are used for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
In the hospital and clinical settings, medical technologists are responsible for analyzing blood, body fluids and tissues to detect disease; computerized, automated instruments and analyzers are utilized in this process. Technologists also develop and evaluate new test procedures, perform quality control, educate other laboratory professionals and manage the laboratory. Training includes the five major disciplines of blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology. Medical technologists have limited patient contact.
