The Metro-Urban Studies Program is a multidisciplinary major that employs the lenses of sociology, political science, history, economics and fine art to analyze the city as a social, political, economic, and aesthetic unit, that has been shaped through specific socio-historical processes.
The most important way to learn about the city is to be in the city. The Metro-Urban Studies major emphasizes hands-on learning. Students go on walking tours of Minneapolis, take field trips throughout the metro area, conduct off-campus study with organizations like HECUA both abroad and within the Twin Cities. They meet urban planners, affordable housing advocates, and community organizers in their courses and through their participation in internships and community service.
