The Middle Childhood Education program is a unique program in that every major must choose two concentration areas for special study out of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In addition to becoming proficient to teach two areas of learning, training in teaching Reading is also emphasized. At the end of the program a candidate is provisionally certified to teach two subjects in grades 4 through 9. At Cedarville University there are specialized courses specifically for middle childhood. When studying science, for example, there are specialty courses such as science concepts, methods, and environmental science just for the middle childhood major. The same is true for the other three concentrations. Besides the experiences observing/helping for a week in a local Christian School and 60 hours of teacher’s aid in an urban setting and special education, the middle childhood major earns weeks of experience in teaching reading and teaching their two concentration areas, all before their 10 week student teaching. Our graduates are very well prepared for taking charge of a middle school classroom.
