The goal of the music major at Amherst College is to provide you with a solid
grounding in music theory and the fundamentals of composition, to teach you to
think and write critically about music, and to help you achieve a level of sophisticated
command in at least in Western music history.

All music majors must complete Music 31, 32, at least one course in music and
culture (Music 21, 22 or 23), and an upper-level course designated as fulfilling
the seminar requirement for the major, which must be taken after Music 31. Music
32 should be completed by the spring semester of the sophomore year and MUST
be completed no later than the spring semester of the junior year. Students
electing to do senior honors projects must demonstrate sufficient achievement
in relevant coursework by the spring of the junior year to demonstrate the ability
to complete independent work in their chosen field. All students are strongly
encouraged to take Music 44 (Music, History and Ideas). Students not doing senior
honor's projects in music must either take Music 44 or pass a comprehensive
exam in the spring of the senior year.

A minimum of eight full courses is required for the music major, up to two
of which may be half-credit performance classes (therefore up to four half-credit
performance classes may count towards the major). Because of the flexibility
of the major, a random selection of eight courses will not constitute fulfilling
the requirements of the major. Students considering the music major are strongly
urged to discuss this possibility with a member of the department during or
immediately following the completion of Music 31. It is strongly recommended
that students contemplating the music major enroll in Music 31 no later than
the spring semester of the sophomore year. Enrollment in Music 31 later than
the sophomore year may present an insurmountalbe obstacle for admission to the
major.
