Music at Agnes Scott offers students a breadth of knowledge and a depth of understanding in the traditions of Western music as well as an introduction to non-Western musics of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Students may elect to emphasize theory, history or performance within their major.
What will I study?
Are you a performer? The music department gives students many opportunities for creativity and personal growth. Take lessons from one of our 25 artist affiliates on standard Western instruments at Agnes Scott. Participate in a number of musical ensembles, including Collegiate Chorale, the chamber choir Sotto Voce, the Agnes Scott College Community Orchestra, the Flute Choir, the gospel choir Joyful Noise, Piano Chamber Ensembles and an African music and dance ensemble. Class instruction is available for beginning-level students in piano, guitar and voice. Solo performance opportunities include departmental recitals, chapel performances and other events on campus and around Atlanta.
Are you a music historian? Emphasize music history and take courses such as Women in Music, Sacred Music of World Religions, Music of the Classical and Romantic Periods and Twentieth-Century Music. Other courses in music history include History of Jazz, American Popular Music, Film Music and History of the American Musical Theatre.
Music theorist? Our music theory courses include Orchestration, Form and Analysis and Composition. We also offer the traditional tonal theory sequence found in every well-rounded music program. Students use the skills developed in theory courses in all their musical endeavors.
The music program offers a balanced approach to the history, theory and performance of music. Majors and minors pursue a course of study that emphasizes one of these primary areas within the discipline. Many of our students pursue a double major with a variety of disciplines: from theatre to biochemistry to psychology. In addition, an interdepartmental cooperation between athletics and music allows students to participate in both simultaneously.
