The music program at Boston University was founded in 1872, making it the oldest degree granting music program in the United States. The fact that the School of Music is part of a major university helps to shape its character. Eben Tourgee, the first dean of the School, outlined the goals of the program in 1873 His belief, still true today, was that the study of the liberal arts "enable students to more intelligently interpret and perform the works of the masters, render their services as instructors more valuable, and qualify them to do far more towards elevating the art to its true position in the estimation of the public."

Alumni and faculty can be found in major symphony orchestras, opera companies and prestigious ensembles throughout the world. Notable faculty include opera singer Phyllis Curtin, composer and conductor Lukas Foss, and violinist Roman Totenberg. Notable alumni include Fred Bronstein, president of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; opera singer Dominique LaBelle; and Ikuko Mizuno-Spire, violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
