School Location
The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degree and the Bachelor of Music Education degree. The department offers courses to all students to broaden their understanding and enjoyment of music as a fine art. Completion of the Bachelor of Music degree prepares students for
careers as agents, performers, arrangers, music consultants, and teachers.

General Requirements
Admission to the department is contingent upon good academic standing and acceptance by the department. A faculty committee will inform the department chairperson and the students whether they should remain as performance major students.

Transfer students who are performance majors will be informed at the time of their initial audition as to whether they may pursue this option. All performance majors will be required to pass proficiency examinations in theory, aural skills, piano, and the applied major area before graduation. All performance majors must perform a junior and senior recital. The junior recital (MUSM 3800/280) must be a minimum of 25 minutes of music. The senior recital (MUSM 4800/380) must be a minimum of 45 minutes of music. Four weeks before each recital, the student must successfully pass a recital hearing for a minimum of three music faculty.

The department will not accept D transfer credit in the major. (Achievement of a C or better grade in major courses completed at Chicago State University is required.) During enrollment in the university, all music majors are required to register and participate in either the university concert or jazz band if an instrumental major, or the university chorus if a voice major, during the Fall and Spring semesters. All students registered for applied lessons must participate in the appropriate ensemble.

Completion of 120 semester hours of work: 36 hours in general education consisting of 6 hours in composition; 6 hours of Foreign Language in a single foreign language; 3 hours of Critical Thinking; 3 hours mathematics, 9 hours in the social sciences, 6 hours in natural sciences and mathematics; and 6 hours in humanities; 67 hours in music emphasizing basic skills; 17 hours in music electives selected with the approval of the departmental advisor; and passing the examination on the state and federal constitutions.
