WHAT IS NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY?
Nuclear medicine technology is the allied health specialty which employs the use of radioactive isotope preparations for diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is a sophisticated, dynamic field which has grown phenomenally during the past decade and is projected to continue growing for years to come.

WHAT IS A NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGIST?
The nuclear medicine technologist (NMT) is a highly-skilled person who, under the direction of a qualified physician, prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals, performs in-vitro assays, calibrates and operates instruments for detection of radiation, processes and prepares organ images, and maintains laboratory safety and quality control.

A solid background in physiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics is required for the NMT before undertaking the year of specialized clinical training and internship at a training hospital. This background is provided in depth by three academic years of preparatory studies at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

The duties of a nuclear medicine technologist may be performed by anyone who has completed the clinical year of specialized training and has attained accredited NMT certification.

The baccalaureate degree program should enable greater opportunities for professional excellence, leadership, and advancement.
