Philosophy is the critical analysis of fundamental beliefs. Adept at abstract thought, students studying philosophy possess keen intelligence, intense devotion, motivation and self-determination. A rigorous discipline, the philosophy program at Agnes Scott follows two separate yet complementary approaches: the systematic approach through courses that deal with specific problems, and the historical approach through courses in the history of philosophy.

What will I study?
As a philosophy student, you will learn the history and ideas of major philosophers, such as Plato, Kant and Descartes. Students also develop and practice techniques of critical analysis and constructive reasoning through courses such as Environmental Ethics, History of Ancient Philosophy, Symbolic Logic, Contemporary Moral Problems and Contemporary Feminist Theory.
The Department of Philosophy also includes an ethics program, which seeks to promote a greater understanding of human values and ethical questions. The ethics program provides courses in theoretical and applied ethics, as well as conferences, workshops, lectures and student events such as essay contests.
