Courses in philosophy are designed to acquaint students with the fundamental principals and methods of the subject and to develop skills in critical thinking and analysis. The works of great writers and thinkers are used to cultivate and hone the skills of written and oral communication, interpersonal relationships, problem solving and adaptability. Like all liberal arts majors, Philosophy provides the vehicle for developing strong, marketable skills of knowing how to find information, knowing how to learn new skills and ideas and knowing how to make connections and see the "big picture.
A major in philosophy will also prepare students for graduate studies in philosophy and provide a solid foundation for law school or other advanced study. A minor in philosophy may be taken in conjunction with any other major and can help students develop a more thoughtful perspective on their field of interest.
