Why should I major in this subject?
Faculty find the discipline of Philosophy interesting because it responds to some of the most fundamental and difficult questions about the world and our place in it. The main areas of philosophy are numerous and include metaphysics which poses the question “what is there in the world and what is it like?” and, epistemology, which responds to the question, “what do we know about the world?” The discipline of philosophy also includes moral and political philosophy, the philosophy of mind and language, which addresses questions about aboutness; logic; and the philosophy of science, aesthetics, and, of course, the history of philosophy (ancient and modern).

What career opportunities follow upon study in this field?
Few of our undergraduate majors intend to become professional philosophers, through background in philosophy is now widely recognized as superb training in critical and analytical thinking. The following comment (from a recruitment officer at a major investment bank) is typical: "We mainly try to hire good physics and philosophy majors, not because of what they know, but because we know that they will learn faster than anyone else." Thus, many of our majors go on to careers in the law, medicine, information technology, or on Wall Street.
