The Photography program has two goals. The first is the development of each student's personal photographic vision. The second is the acquisition of knowledge about and experience in the technical and aesthetic matters specific to photography. At the intermediate level, black-and-white and color photography are explored in more detail in classes devoted entirely to them, as are photo studio techniques. Advanced courses allow majors to concentrate on individualized projects, and work more intensely toward the development of their personal ideals, while preparing a portfolio reflecting their creative identity.
The departmental facilities that directly support the Photography program are housed in a large suite of spaces comprising a lecture room/studio and two darkrooms. Equipment includes thirteen enlarger stations for black-and-white and color processing, print washers and dryers, studio lighting systems, and view cameras for student use. Techniques in electronic/digital imaging can be incorporated through use of the Department's computer laboratory; imaging equipment is upgraded regularly to keep up with advances in technology, changes in demand, and the wear-and-tear of a popular program.
