The playwriting program takes a pragmatic approach, stressing the process and development of a writer's skills. The philosophy of the program is based on the idea that the work must come from within the playwright. In order to write honestly, the writer must be able to make a connection between the conflicts in the play and those in his or her own emotional life. The fundamental approach in the classroom is through a series of sense-memory exercises that are the building blocks that form the true dramatic action of the play. Through this method the playwright ultimately finds his or her own unique voice. Over the course of two years of workshops, the students are exposed to three or four different teachers, with the constant throughline of the program advisor providing continuity. The classes do not aim to teach a specific form such as the one-act or the full-length play. Rather, the students' own voices are encouraged and developed appropriately. The classroom work is supplemented by readings and productions, which allow the works to be heard and seen by an audience while at the same time developing the tools of collaboration with directors, dramaturgs, and actors. The third year of study is devoted to internships in New York and regional theatres (the Shubert Internships) and the writing of the thesis, which consists of a full-length play.
