Political scientists study how political systems work and how they affect those they serve. The study of political science develops the skills needed to understand who in the system "gets what, when they get it and how they get it." The discipline also develops the ability to think abstractly, analyze and sort through information, investigate cause and effect and look beyond the popular and often cynical explanations of public problems to envision solutions. For these reasons, it is often the major of choice for students considering a career in law.
The School of History, Political and International Studies offers a major in Political Science. This program is for students who wish to pursue political studies about the origins and evolution of governments. It also deals with decline and conflicts among governments. The student will learn about how governments are structured, how governments make decisions, the policies that result from those decisions and the consequences of those policies. Political science in the broadest sense is the study of governments political behavior, procedures and policies - including "governments" which are sovereign states, international entities, or subunits of political systems. Thus, political science has many facets.
