The successful completion of a minimum of three years in an accredited college or university is a requirement for admission to Boston University School of Dental Medicine. The Admissions Committee places primary emphasis on an applicant's undergraduate record. The committee also takes into account the student's score on the Dental Admissions Test and, where appropriate, such factors as marked improvement in undergraduate grades, the quality and difficulty of the courses taken, demonstrated leadership ability, and motivation for the study of dentistry. Outstanding nonacademic achievement may also lead to a favorable consideration. Finally, letters of recommendation are strongly considered.
A personal interview is required of all applicants whose credentials are acceptable to the Admissions Committee. Every effort will be made to arrange a meeting that is convenient for the candidate. In certain circumstances, regional interviews may be arranged. A personal interview does not guarantee acceptance.
Predental Study
The Admissions Committee requires a program of study that includes the following courses or their equivalents as part of the pre-professional training.
required courses:
Biology. One-and-one-half years with lab (12 semester hours). Sugested courses include basic biology, genetics, embryology, molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
Chemistry. Two years with lab (16 semester hours). A sound understanding of the basic principles of inorganic and organic chemistry is required. The 16 semester hours should be divided equally between general and organic chemistry courses.
Physics. One year with lab (8 semester hours). Students should know the general principles of physical laws and phenomena, including courses in mechanics, light, heat, sound, electricity, and radiation.
English. One year or the equivalent at the college level, even if the student received advanced credit on entry into college.
Mathematics. One year (6 semester hours). A basic understanding of calculus is needed.
elective courses:
Social Sciences. Three years (18 semester hours). The committee strongly recommends that the applicant's curriculum include courses in psychology, humanities, sociology or anthropology, and economics.
