About the Program
The Psychobiology Interdepartmental Major offers students interested in both psychology and biology the opportunity to combine those interests. The burgeoning fields of neuroscience and neuropsychology are among those areas which feature the interface between psychology and biology. It is also an appropriate concentration for students interested in health professions, veterinary medicine or animal behavior. Recent graduates are attending medical school at Duke University, pursuing a Master's in Public Health program at Columbia University, working as a clinical trials administrator for a drug company and attending veterinary school at Purdue University.
The core courses for the major introduce students to the major theories and methods of the two disciplines. Students acquire a basic understanding of the principles of scientific research and critical thinking applicable to all the sciences. Advanced courses can be chosen to best serve students' interests. For example, students interested in animal behavior might choose to take Animal Behavior, Vertebrate Zoology and Ornithology; those interested in neuroscience might prefer Excitable Cells and Systems, Advanced Cell Physiology and Organic Chemistry.
