Students will be assigned a faculty adviser who will help them develop a strategic plan based on their career goals. This plan may include non-psychology courses as varied as biology and computer sciences. Students may also want to consult with their adviser to determine the courses most applicable to their discipline.

In addition to fulfilling the General Education requirements, students must complete 41 credits in psychology to be awarded a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

Courses generally follow a defined course sequence. The undergraduate psychology curriculum is divided into four categories:

Foundation courses ensure broad exposure to the fundamental disciplines in psychology. Typically, these courses are prerequisistes for advanced study in psychology.

Methods and lab courses provide familiarity with research methodology, including statistics and the process of designing and conducting research.

Central courses cover the major areas of psychological science and practice. These courses are a prerequisite for an advanced seminar.

Advanced/seminar courses examine specific areas of research or practice in the sub-disciplines of psychology. Each year's topics are chosen on the basis of developments in the field, faculty research interests, and students' needs.

Practica provide supervised experience in field settings and in the laboratory. The following is a list of potential sites for field work:

* The Meeting Place, Peninsula Counseling Center
* Hispanic Counseling Center, Inc.
* Nassau County Medical Center
* Garvey House, East Meadow
* Mercy Medical Center
* Roosevelt Community Mental Health Center
* Hillside Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center
* Nassau County Correctional Facility.

Psychology majors who graduate with a grade-point average of 3.3 in their psychology courses may be eligible for honors in psychology. A student with a GPA of 3.6 in psychology may qualify for high departmental honors.
