Students majoring in psychology are required to elect nine courses in psychology. The major is designed to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the content of the discipline and the skills required to work within it. Currently, majors must complete three broad introductory courses (Psych 11, 12, 22), distribution area courses in three of the four areas listed below, and an advanced seminar. The distribution area courses provide a thorough understanding of a fundamental area within psychology. The advanced seminar provides in-depth experience with advanced material building on prior coursework. Starting with the class of ‘10, majors will also be required to complete one laboratory class and one intermediate seminar. Laboratory classes will provide experience with research methods and the interpretation of data. Intermediate seminars will pay close attention to reading psychology texts and to both written and oral expression. Laboratory classes count towards the distribution area requirement, but intermediate seminars do not. The three broad introductory classes (Psych 11, 12, and 22), one laboratory class, and one intermediate seminar must be completed prior to the end of the junior year.
