Bard College Bachelor degree Race and Ethnicity
Race continues to affect the social world, from the continuing legacies of the racist past to racial consciousness in the form of ethnic cleansing or celebratory forms of identity formation and cultural/artistic expression, to current cultural and policy controversies surrounding issues such as immigration, education, welfare, crime, and public art. Finally, race is intertwined, in the post–9/11 world, with nationalisms, ethnic animosities, and religious fundamentalisms generated by globalization that need to be carefully scrutinized.
Studies in Race and Ethnicity (SRE) focuses on critical analyses of such subjects as ethnic conflict, racism, multiculturalism, immigration, and visual, cinematic, literary, and aesthetic representation. Students should learn to appreciate how the study of race and ethnicity is situated within its historical and intellectual context; recognize the diverse issues that characterize the study of race and ethnicity in the United States and other nations; and evaluate the impact of policies pertaining to race and ethnicity, as well as debates about their futures.
