Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services program work with people who have physical, developmental, or psychiatric disabilities to assist them in acquiring the skills needed to obtain satisfying work and lead fulfilling lives. The program offers students opportunities for personal and professional growth necessary to pursue a career in this field. The combination of professional courses, clinical placements, and guidance of experienced faculty make for a unique learning opportunity.
The undergraduate program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services and prepares students for a Master of Science degree Rehabilitation Counseling or other related fields. The program is a charter member of the National Registry of Undergraduate Programs in Disability and Rehabilitation Studies.
Students in the program complete one-half of their coursework in the humanities and the sciences (social, biological, and behavioral). The remaining courses focus on the theory and practice of rehabilitation and human services. A two-day-per-week field experience of two consecutive semesters is required during the senior year. Students participate in field experience with selected agencies, schools, clinics, hospitals, and other rehabilitation facilities in the greater Boston area under the supervision of qualified rehabilitation practitioners and the department faculty who are certified rehabilitation counselors (CRC).
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science program have several options. They may apply to a graduate program in rehabilitation counseling or a related field, seek employment as rehabilitation practitioners, or elect other areas of study within the human services and the social sciences. Because of the applied nature of the curriculum, graduates in rehabilitation and human services are prepared for a number of human service positions, including rehabilitation counselor trainees, rehabilitation caseworkers, employment interviewers, mental health workers, employment counselors, disability management specialists, and job placement specialists. Rehabilitation and human services courses provide excellent preparation for graduate training in rehabilitation counseling in more than 100 programs throughout the country.
Because coursework in the first two years of the program focuses primarily on arts and sciences courses, students may transfer into the program during their junior year.
