Whether we see it as a good thing or a bad thing, religion is a fixture in human life and society as we know it. It plays a role in areas as diverse as politics, medicine, sexuality, and economics. One need not consider oneself “religious” in order to find religion worth studying. Not surprisingly, an academic discipline has risen up to help make sense of both the history of religions religious experience in general.
Among other things, Religious Studies examines the way a person or community makes sense out of life (world view) and the ways a person or community acts out a particular world view (lifestyle). The study of religion includes (1) exploration of the nature and meaning of religious dimensions of human experience (theorizing religion); (2) study of the major traditions which remember and transmit religious experience and expressions (world religions, history, and theology); (3) familiarity with major scholarly approaches to the study of religion (methodology); and (4) understanding of the concrete implications of religious world views (ethics).
