Religion and Philosophy – two disciplines with deep common roots – have tended to grow apart in recent generations and in many American and European academic institutions. Philosophy in the Western world has tended to pursue a specialized intellectual agenda emphasizing logic and conceptual analysis, while religious study has continued to explore a spiritual dimension of life that sometimes seems to defy thoroughgoing understanding at the level of the intellect. At Fisk, however, the two disciplines have remained closely allied – reflecting their historic relationship in Western culture, and the relationship they continue to maintain in most of the rest of the world.
