Advances in information technology have captured the public imagination and had tremendous economic and social impact in recent decades. These advances have also created a great need for high quality, dependable software developed at predictable cost. Software engineering is a profession dedicated to addressing this need.

There is good reason to believe that creation of software will never be easy. But there is tremendous incentive to make the process as efficient and predictable as possible. Software engineering does this by the application of appropriate processes, methods, and tools to the problem of building and maintaining software. The goal of software engineering is to be able to create software with a defined level of quality, at a predictable cost, on a predictable schedule.

The Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering prepares students for careers focused on all aspects of creation and management of complex software systems. The degree program provides foundations in a range of computer science, engineering, and information systems topics. These are supplemented with courses that develop skills in various approaches to problem solving, oral and written communication, and working in teams.

Software engineers also benefit from knowledge of the application area in which they are working. For example, someone developing software for business needs an understanding of business, someone developing software for scientific computing needs to understand science and advanced mathematics, and someone developing software to control manufacturing equipment needs knowledge of mechanical or electrical engineering. To help students develop this application area knowledge, the B.S.S.E. includes two tracks, the engineering track and the general track.

The Embedded Track and the General Track
Both tracks have a large common core and similar overall structure, but they help students prepare to work in different application domains. The embedded track supports students interested in developing software for areas including engineering applications, for embedded systems, and some types of systems software. Students in this track take the standard Drexel engineering foundation curriculum (tDEC) with additional engineering electives.

The general track supports students interested in developing software for areas including information systems, systems software, and science, social science, and business applications. Students in this track take additional elective courses in information systems and / or computer science, additional courses in liberal tudies, and some required courses in business and the sciences. General track students interested in information systems and business applications are admitted to the College of Information Science and Technology. Students interested in systems software and scientific applications are admitted to the Department of Computer Science.
