Students in this Majors Abroad Program (MAP) will spend at least one year abroad,
taking Spain-related courses in Spain. This major is different from a major in
Spanish, which is centered in language skills with some cultural components. The
Spanish Cultural Studies major assumes the student has mastered the language component
and focuses on the study of specific areas such as the culture, art, history,
politics, geography, literature, cinema, music, or the economy of the Iberian
Peninsula.
The Spanish Cultural Studies major is designed for students interested in pursuing
graduate studies related to the Spanish language and literature. This major
provides a broad perspective in different areas of Spanish life. Students majoring
in Spanish Cultural Studies will
*Undertake in-depth study of Spain as a country and its civilization.
*Study Spain in relation to other Mediterranean cultures and its influence in
the Region.
*Study the impact of Spain as a member of the European Union and as a bridge
to North-African nations and Latin America.
*Study the role of Spain as a former colonial power in Africa and Latin America
and its present role as an intermediary before the European Union.
*Compare U.S. historical evolution with that of Spain as an international power.
*Compare U.S. values with those of a country that, like the United States, is
the product of a historical merging of cultures.
Students need to meet the GPA eligibility requirements for study abroad through
Arcadia's Center for Education Abroad. Students who decide not to study abroad
should be able to complete the major in Spanish language on schedule.
