Why should I major in this subject?
Why study Spanish, Portuguese, or Catalan?
Given the demographic circumstances of the United States, the label "foreign language" is no longer appropriate to describe the status of Spanish in this country. Indeed, Spanish and the various strands of Hispanic culture are increasingly acknowledged as the second national linguistic and cultural realities of the United States. Similarly, the cultural and economic rise of Brazil and the status of Portuguese as the sixth most spoken language in the world underscore the latter's importance.

  • Spanish is one of the world's most widely-spoken languages, after Mandarin, English and Hindi, and the second language in the US. Over 200 million people in Portugal, Brazil, Africa, Asia, and the US speak Portuguese. Over seven million people speak Catalan in the culturally vibrant provinces of eastern Spain.
  • The modern Luso-Hispanic world encompasses an astonishingly diverse array of cultures and has a long, rich and complex history.
  • The political, cultural and economic ties between the US and the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world are among this country's most significant, and the influence of Hispanics and Hispanic-Americans in the national scene grows daily.
  • The New York metropolitan area is a major center of Luso-Hispanic cultures, and Columbia University is situated in the midst of a vibrant Hispanic community.

What career opportunities follow upon study in this field?
