Spanish, after English, is the most widely spoken language in the U.S. today. Because there are Hispanic populations in every major city across the country, knowledge of Spanish as a second or a foreign language is an advantage to individuals seeking employment in many fields, such as the social services, education, the health-related professions, etc. In addition, language study facilitates continued professional preparation since most graduate schools require profi ciency in at least one non-native language.
Learning another language and experiencing another culture also increase awareness of one’s own linguistic and cultural traditions; individuals with foreign language training often become more astute observers of the world and better readers and writers in their first language.
The Hispanic world embraces both Europe and the Western Hemisphere, and it is extremely diverse in culture and tradition.
Contemporary Latin American literature is recognized worldwide for its aesthetic and political value. In addition, the new generation of Latin American women authors has undertaken the exciting task of re-writing history from women’s perspectives.
Students with previous courses in Spanish may request a placement exam from the language program faculty to determine the appropriate entry level.
