The recently implemented special education learning disabilities major at Coastal Carolina University prepares students for South Carolina teacher certification in Learning Disabilities grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12 (PreK-12). The breadth of this grade span is recognized in the program's curriculum, which offers authentic learning experiences through campus and field-based participatory learning experiences in diverse settings at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, including internships in schools.
Students majoring in special education will focus in the disability area of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD). Study in the core areas of English, math, science, and social studies as well as art or music and health prepare students for content they will be expected to teach. To prepare for classroom interaction, students in the special education SLD program receive extensive preparation in child growth and development, technology, exceptional learner characteristics and differences, instructional strategies and planning, learning environments and social interactions, language and reading, assessment, collaboration, and professional and ethical practice.
