Sculpture students at East Tennessee State University have the opportunity to work with a variety of media, including such traditional materials as stone, bronze, steel, clay, and wood. Projects ranging from temporary and site specific environmental art, to community oriented outdoor sculpture and installation are also encouraged.
Our program does not subscribe to any particular ideology, media preference, technical direction or conceptual philosophy, but encourages students to develop their own visions as artists and the skills necessary to create their sculpture. Sculpture students explore many possibilities with regard to the realization of their ideas, and are exposed to both the history of sculpture and current developments in the field.
Introduction to Sculpture, ARTA 2501, exposes students to a variety of ideas, processes, and materials, providing experience in modeling, armature building, outdoor site specific projects, basic work with wood tools, and basic welding and casting projects. The intermediate sculpture sections, ARTA 3501 and ARTA 3502, provide further instruction in additional processes, such as stone carving, bronze casting, and mold making, while expecting students to begin developing personal directions. The upper level sculpture classes, ARTA 4501, ARTA 4502, and Independent Study and Special Topics classes, offer specific materials and technical instruction, and encourage students to further develop a direction and body of work. Students are also supported in their explorations with mixed media, new media and installation.
