Mission/Goals
For both scholars and artists in the Department of Theater Studies, the dramatic text is the source of information and inspiration and forms the basis of our work. An investigation of its social, political, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions guides the faculty’s research and teaching. Producing theater is our primary laboratory for the study of dramatic texts. We also emphasize that the study of dramatic texts, both past and present, requires collaboration between those who primarily analyze drama and those who create theater. The department is also devoted to the creation, development, production, and criticism of new works for the stage.

Scholars and dramaturgs in the department are primarily engaged in critical thinking about plays in production and theater as popular culture. The department is dedicated to exposing students to the critical analysis of dramatic literature in the classroom and on the stage and to educating students in the theatrical disciplines of acting, writing, directing and design. In addition to work for the stage, the department develops students’ understanding of and production capabilities in other media including television, radio, film, and digital media.

Through its productions, the department cultivates the aesthetic sensibilities of students as enlightened audience members by exposing them to a variety of dramatic experiences and provides a unique contribution to the life of the university.

Learning Outcomes for Undergraduate Education in Theater Studies

Goal 1: A Theater Studies major will have a critical understanding of how dramatic texts work and the methods by which those texts are realized in production.

Goal 2: A Theater Studies major will have capacities in critical and creative writing (for stage, screen, radio, television and new media), acting directing, and designing.

Goal 3: A Theater Studies major will have the ability to engage in the collaborative communication and processes necessary to the creation of theater.

Goal 4: A Theater Studies major will apply research skills, under faculty direction, to conceive and execute a final project in acting, directing, criticism, playwriting or design.

Goal 5: A Theater Studies major will be familiar with postgraduate training opportunities in professional theater and academia.
