Thank you for looking into the EKU Theatre programs! We are part of the larger Department of English and Theatre and offer degrees Theatre Theatre Teaching. The more popular non-teaching option combines coursework in all areas of Theatre—acting, design, history, directing, technical theatre and dance—with upper level English courses in dramatic literature and composition which will help you in your total University education as well as your life after college. The teaching option requires a minor in English and professional education classes (including a student teaching experience) to better prepare you for a career in secondary education.
Our co-curricular production program is outstanding. Each year EKU Theatre produces four major mainstage productions—one of which is always a musical. Other shows are selected from across theatre history from the ancient classics to the most current scripts Broadway and off-Broadway have to offer. The Gifford Theatre is a modern state-of-the-art technical theatre facility complete with computer lighting system, scene and costume shops, and comfortable dressing rooms. All students are encouraged to participate in the various areas of production, and auditions for all shows are open to anyone. Over the past few years, EKU Theatre has presented such classic scripts as Oedipus the King, Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, Waiting for Godot, and She Stoops to Conquer as well as contemporary shows like Into the Woods, I Hate Hamlet, Proof, and Grease.
