Why should I major in this subject?
The visual arts are at the core of virtually everything we experience as "man-made." Not only is the fine art world (museums, galleries; etc.) dependent upon the products of visual artists, but all objects, books, electronic visual media, parks, and buildings were first conceived and then realized by individuals who had visual arts training. A major in Visual Art at Columbia University provides solid instruction in the techniques necessary to create visual art and in the mental skills necessary to imagine and think in visual terms.

What career opportunities follow upon study in this field?
Many of our students choose to continue their studies in a Master of Fine Arts Program in such schools as Yale, Hunter, UCLA, California Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Columbia University. Others, upon graduation, are eager to apply their visual arts training directly in such fields as architecture, film and theatre design, Web design, graphic design, product design, and gallery and muse
