Bachelor degrees in Anthropology: A program that focuses on the systematic study of human beings, their antecedents and related primates, and their cultural behavior and institutions, in comparative perspective. Includes instruction in biological/physical anthropology, primatology, human paleontology and prehistoric archeology, hominid evolution, anthropological linguistics, ethnography, ethnology, ethnohistory, socio-cultural anthropology, psychological anthropology, research methods, and applications to areas such as medicine, forensic pathology, museum studies, and international affairs.
In addition to performing research in conventional laboratories, anthropologists also conduct research in field sites. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in ethnographic archaeological and physical anthropological endeavors, many of which are sponsored on Long Island, the greater metropolitan region, Central America, and selected overseas locations including Thailand, India, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece.
What does it mean to be a human being? Sociology and anthropology students at Agnes Scott deal with this question in a variety of ways and from many different points of view. Sociology focuses on the study of human society, including social action and social organizations. Anthropology compares societies and cultures, looking at both the unity of humankind and the diverse and unique ways different societies meet basic human needs.
