Bachelor degrees in Applied Mathematics: A program that focuses on the application of mathematics and statistics to the solution of functional problems in fields such as engineering and the applied sciences. Includes instruction in natural phenomena modeling continuum mechanics, reaction-diffusion, wave propagation, dynamic systems, numerical analysis, controlled theory, asymptotic methods, variation, optimization theory, inverse problems, and applications to specific scientific and industrial topics.
Students who are interested in preparing for careers in business or industry should choose Applied Math emphasis. Courses introduce a variety of areas of applied mathematics. This emphasis must complete: Math 105, 106, 112, 205, 291, 305, 315, 321, 331, 332, 333, two units of 370, 435 or 440, one course (3 units) at the 300 or 400 level in Math, and Computer Science 105.
The interwoven fields of applied and computational mathematics are among the most interdisciplinary of all research areas, encompassing modeling, analysis, algorithm development, and simulation for problems arising throughout the pure sciences and engineering.
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics: Option in Applied Mathematics The requirements are listed below. Some of the required or optional courses are taught only once a year. In the requirements list the letter (F) indicates Fall semester only and (S) indicates Spring semester only.
