The program in Biology will be designed in consultation with the faculty in biology
and will require written approval of the Chair, PREFERABLY NO LATER THAN THE BEGINNING
OF THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE JUNIOR YEAR. The program recognizes the special
needs of the pre-college teacher and provides for a broad background in both the
biological sciences and cognate areas. The course of study will include:
The Department of Biological Sciences offers courses in basic biological sciences for all students as well as specialized subjects for its majors. The purpose of the department's course offerings, especially for the teaching majors, is to provide sufficient background in zoology and botany as well as general biology and other specialized biological courses. The major in Biological Science Education prepares students to teach Biology in grades eight through twelve. In addition to the curriculum
requirements outlined, students pursuing this degree must meet the criteria for admission to the Teacher Education Program and Student
Teaching. Upon completion of this program students must meet other specified Education Professional Standards Board requirements in
order to secure certification.
