Bachelor degrees in Biotechnology: A program that focuses on the application of the biological sciences, biochemistry, and genetics to the preparation of new and enhanced agricultural, environmental, clinical, and industrial products, including the commercial exploitation of microbes, plants, and animals. Includes instruction in bioinformatics, gene identification, phylogenetics and comparative genomics, bioinorganic chemistry, immunoassaying, DNA sequencing, xenotransplantation, genetic engineering, industrial microbiology, drug and biologic development, enzyme-based production processes, patent law, biotechnology management and marketing, applicable regulations, and biotechnology ethics.
The goal of the Biology Department is to engender a comprehensive knowledge of and appreciation for the many dimensions of the biological sciences. We emphasize the close relationship of biology to other scientific disciplines, such as mathematics, chemistry and physics, and also stress the importance of biology in society and within the historical liberal arts tradition.
Albright offers a special track in biotechnology. This track is primarily for...
The CMBT track emphasizes fundamentals and applications of biochemistry, biophysics, and cell biology. Students in this track will acquire a deep understanding of the molecular and cellular bases for life processes, quantitative modeling skills needed to develop biotechnologies based on live cell cultures, as well as technologies that exploit the unique properties of biomolecules in non-biological settings. One of the unique characteristics of this...
Program Description The field of Biotechnology is concerned with the application of biological systems and organisms to technical and industrial processes. Its status as the most rapidly-expanding area of biology has resulted in substantial changes in the typical biology curriculum. Biotechnology training is necessary for students to compete and meet the technological challenges facing industry in the 21st century.
The Biotechnology curriculum prepares students for biological research careers utilizing new methodologies of microbiology and cellular and molecular biology and provides an additional option of study for students wishing to enter graduate school. Emphasizing ’problem-based learning,“ student internships and integration with the Core Curriculum, the major also provides a unique learning experience, stressing ethical use of technology, lifelong learning...
Whether you want to improve the diagnosis and treatment of disease, develop better agricultural practices that will protect the environment and alleviate hunger or use microbes for remediation of contaminated soil and water, Gannon‘s biotechnology program can help prepare you to make a difference in today‘s and tomorrow‘s world. As a biotechnology major you can transform your interest in and deepen your knowledge of the life sciences, and work to...
Students who have completed an Associate of Applied Science degree biotechnology or a related field from a community college with which UMUC has an articulation agreement for this major may seek an academic major in biotechnology. Students should consult an advisor before selecting this major. The major in biotechnology is based on a collaborative arrangement between UMUC and specific Maryland community...
The major in laboratory management focuses on the management and coordination of the nontechnical activities that contribute to a safe and well-run biochemical laboratory. It provides both in-depth study of scientific concepts and procedures (during associate's degree study at the community college level) and laboratory management skills. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to meet employer...
