Bachelor degrees in Geochemistry: A program that focuses on the scientific study of the chemical properties and behavior of the silicates and other substances forming, and formed by geomorphological processes of the earth and other planets. Includes instruction in chemical thermodynamics, equilibrium in silicate systems, atomic bonding, isotopic fractionation, geochemical modeling, specimen analysis, and studies of specific organic and inorganic substances.
The geochemistry concentration encourages students majoring either in geology or in chemistry to design a course of study that emphasizes earth chemistry. In geology this concentration includes at least: GEOL 101, 103, 202, 205; one of 301 or 302 or 305; CHEM 101 or 103, 104 and 231 (Inorganic Chemistry). Additional chemistry courses might include 211 (Organic Chemistry) or 222 (Physical Chemistry). Other courses that complement this concentration...
Geochemistry is the study of the chemical and structural composition and evolution of Earth and its component parts, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, crust, mantle, and core, as well as extraterrestrial matter, such as meteorites and comets, other planets, the sun, and distant stars. It concerns itself with the distribution and migration of elements within the Earth and its atmosphere. Over time, geochemistry has evolved from a descriptive science...
Chemistry provides fundamental knowledge critical to satisfying many of society's needs: feeding and clothing and housing the world's people, finding and using sources of energy, improving health care, ensuring national security, and protecting the environment. The programs of the Chemistry and Geochemistry Department are designed to educate professionals for the varied career opportunities this central scientific discipline affords.
UMUC offered its first distance education courses in 1972. Today, more than 30 percent of our students are enrolled in courses that do not require on-site class attendance. The Internet serves as their link to the university.
