Bachelor degrees in German Studies: A program that focuses on the history, society, politics, culture, and economics of Germany, the neighboring countries of Austria and Switzerland, the German minorities in neighboring European countries, and the historical areas of German influence across Europe and overseas.
The study of German at Agnes Scott encompasses more than speaking and understanding the German language. The program is widely focused, emphasizing composition, conversation, literature, German life and thought, history and music. Small class sizes allow the program to be intimate and flexible, giving students the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with fellow classmates and instructors.

The BA in Language and Area Studies is designed for students with a strong interest
in a region of the world and in a language of that region. The program, jointly
designed and administered by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the School
of International Service (SIS), builds on the strengths of the CAS Department
of Language and Foreign Studies (LFS) and the SIS field of Comparative and Regional
Studies.
Students must be approved by the department for formal admission to the major.
Language course work may be waived if high school or other preparation warrants
it. Placement will be made in consultation with a departmental adviser. University Requirements
* A total of 120 credit hours
* Six credit hours of college writing
* Three credit hours of college mathematics or the equivalent by examination
The German Studies Major is broadly humanistic and cross-cultural. It develops language and cultural literacy skills and provides a critical understanding of the literary and cultural traditions of the German-speaking countries: The Federal Republic of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The Department offers effective preparation for graduate study in German literature and language while also opening up a broad range of interdisciplinary perspectives.
